Chamonix Mont-Blanc (Cham or Chamonix) is in south-eastern France, below Lake Geneva. It is only about a one-hour car drive from Geneva international airport. As Chamonix borders both Switzerland and Italy, it is closer to resorts like Courmayeur (Italy) Megève (France), Verbier (Switzerland) – all great to ski and have a day trip from here.

Transfer times to Chamonix resorts will depend on where you will fly into. Though, most Alpine Holidaymakers to Chamonix fly to Geneva. If you wish to fly private with the jet charter by Victor, Geneva is the best option.

Nearest Train station: If you are coming by train, the nearest train stop is in the centre of Chamonix. Chamonix is renowned for its petite town which is situated at the foot of Mont-Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain at 4,810m. Without a doubt Chamonix is any skiers dream, from Beginners to experts, there is something for everyone.  Beginner-friendly areas to World’s Best off-piste itineraries such as the spectacularly picturesque 20km Vallée Blanche is any skier and snowboarders challenge.

Guide to the slopes of Chamonix

With so many Ski areas to discover, You will probably need at least one week in Chamonix, so each day for a different ski area. Chamonix is comprised of 5 Ski areas, 69 lifts accessing over 150 km of pistes, and 15,000 acres of off-piste skiing, it offers terrain for every level. From beginners to experts’ skiers. Chamonix’s spread out into 5 ski areas; (from left to right on the Map) Le Brévent/La Flégère ((1030-2525m) (both linked), Domaine de Balme ((1453-2270m with 2 access points from the hamlets of Le Tour and Vallorcine), Les Grands Montets (1235-3300m), L’Aiguille du Midi/La Vallee Blanche (1030-3842m), and Les Houches (950-1900m) are fantastic playgrounds for the confident beginners to skilled skiers and snowboarders. For the Less confident, Try the lower part of the Mountain, you will find loads of gentle slopes in Chamonix valley great for beginners: in Argentiere, Les Chosalets (1230m; in Vallorcine, La Poya (1120m); and in Le Tour, La Vormaine (1480m) are very few to name.

For relaxed trouble-free Ski holiday, we recommend you get the Mont-Blanc unlimited lift pass rather than the limited Le Pass, which has access to Le Brévent/La Flégère ski area, as well as Balme, Les Grands Montets, Les Planards (1062-1242m) near the village, Les Chosalets, La Vormaine, and unlimited access to Aiguille du Midi cable car. It also covers the neighbouring ski areas such as Courmayeur in Italy, Megève in France, Verbier in Switzerland as already mentioned right above. If it is cloudy in Chamonix, the chances are high, it will be sunny in Courmayeur, where the ski area has 31 pistes.

Most of the runs in Chamonix are Blues and reds. With 36, Blue runs, and 40 Reds. There are only 15 green runs and 15 black runs in Chamonix, making it a good mix for all levels of skiers and snowboarders.

Is Chamonix good for beginners?

With flat, nice gentle slopes, Les Houches is perfectly suited for families with children and beginners. Intermediates also can benefit in Les Houches as it’s less challenging terrain, a great way to warm up yourself for the ski holiday in Chamonix. Also, beginner slopes are available in Argentiere, Les Planards, Le Tour, and Brevent. If you skiing with your family Teleski de Savoy is an ideal learning zone for kids.

Intermediate skiers  – Which ski slopes are best in Chamonix for Intermediates?

Le Brevent & La Flegere is located on a sun-drenched south-facing slope of Chamonix. Tons of terrain for intermediate skiers. However, if you are looking for some challenging terrain it’s good to try Flegere, which has a good mix of Blue runs and red runs, in addition to some exciting black runs. Brevent-Flegere is linked, if you are travelling with a large group with different levels, Brevent-Flegere is a good choice for group skiing.

Chamonix for Experienced – Off Piste Skiing

If you are a confident intermediate or expert skier, must try the renowned La Vallee Blanche (with a Guide of course), a stunning off piste route through splendid glacial backdrop that starts from the top of the Aiguille du Midi all way down to town, its 12 and half mile 9000 vertical feet back to town.

Chamonix for Snowboarding / Freestyle Skiing

While Chamonix offers some remarkable freeriding, Snowboarding is not necessarily for experienced boarders, for the beginner, the terrain park at Grands Montets above Argentiere is worth giving it a go. The easier option is the terrain at Le Brevent which can be reached by cable cars and chairlifts. If you wish to Board the Vallee Blanche its always recommended to hire a guide.

January Ski season

January is always a cold month in the Alps, yet the powder is dry and light, and you are sure to see many Russian skiers here to party during their Christmas holidays on the 7th of January, it can be noisy and crazy, so be prepared to expect some noise until the middle of January. Chamonix is surrounded by bars and restaurants. After day of skiing, Many enjoy the après ski scene and nightlife, If you are looking for some serious clubbing, then Chamonix is not the place. If you are in the mood for Live Music & Dance party Moneky Bar (Wheelchair Accessible, tasty food and good for the wallet), Le Vert,  and The Jekyll (British cuisines, tasty food! Some good beers and great music!) are some good choices.

Chambre Neuf has a live band at 5 p.m., and get crowded, Probably the best Apres Ski Scene in Meribel. Its at Hotel Langley Gustavia. If you are looking for a good apres-ski scene (Music, beers, pizzas, sport on TV) maybe it’s best to head to Office in Argentiere, a good active entertainment bar If staying in Argentière as it closer to Grand Montets experiences.  If you are more in the Centre of town, La Folie Douce hotel Chamonix has an Apres ski party with Musicians, DJ’s & Dancers which ends by 8 pm. And last but not least, Amnesia is worth mentioning, it is the biggest club in Chamonix, Located in town near the Aiguille du Midi cable car.

Albert Premier Restaurant in Chamonix is a Michelin star restaurant in the 5 * Relais & Châteaux hotel in Hameau Albert 1er – Check their website for reservations and Bookings. This two Michelin starred restaurant Uses fresh local ingredients, Pierre Carrier and his team are always on the look to creating exquisite new gastronomic experiences for the seasons.  For groups and Romantics, alike Atmosphere restaurant in the heart of Chamonix Mont-Blanc is an excellent choice.  If you are looking for a Michelin star restaurant for a reasonable budget, it’s worth checking this out! Call to make a reservation – +33 4 50 55 97 97.  If you have special needs such as anyone in your group that requires Vegetarian-Friendly meals, Vegan Options or Gluten Free Options they should be happy yo cater to such needs, The menu mainly is French Local cuisine and European meals.

If you are looking for traditional French cuisines and French wines, Panier des 4 Saisons, the Price for a mina dish is somewhere between £22-£32 per person, and usually with wines and extras may work around £40 – £60 pp.

If you wondering where is the best place to eat at the highest altitude in Chamonix? Aiguille du Midi – Le 3842, Things naturally don’t come cheap at this height, Expect to pay somewhere between £45 – £85 pp. The restaurant opens from 11.30 am to 3 pm. So better call and check if they could have you (+33 4 50 55 82 23). Ask if they can reserve those tables with spectacular views.

What is a ski chalet holiday in Chamonix?

Basically, a ski chalet holiday is booking your own private home – most times with staff, housekeepers and chef included and at other times as a self-catered option. Ski chalets are freestanding properties, which in most cases are made out of Stone and/or Wood and has homelier look from outside, the interior however is very luxurious with Alpine charm. However please check at the time of booking, as things have changed and not all chalets stand alone, so it may be called a ‘chalet’ as there could more than 2 ‘chalet apartment’ style properties in large building construction.

What is a Fully serviced or catered chalet? And how does it work?

Catered luxury ski chalets are a great choice for those who wish to spend less time in the kitchen and more time on the slopes.

In Chamonix, Catered can mean either part of your meals or all your meals is included catered price. However, you should not have this confused with some chalets that say Accommodation only or included Breakfast. It’s Wise to check this at the time of enquiry or prior to your booking.

When you book a ski chalet in Chamonix on a catered basis, upon arrival the chalet host will welcome you and make sure to take full charge of your accommodation, this means from keeping the chalet neat to arranging your meals. Catered ski chalets usually if not always have a chef to prepare meals, a chalet host who will provide housekeeping services and who will serve your meals. These meals will usually include breakfast, afternoon tea, pre-dinner canapés, and a 4-course dinner, as well as unlimited wine, you will find in each property chalet page all these inclusions.

Depending on the chalet. Either a day or two the host may not be in the chalet, as a day off. During this period, you can help yourself with *breakfast and dine outside, trying the local cuisine available around. From budget to Michelin star restaurants are easy to be found. It is good to take a note, that some chalets may share the dining area with others. When booking a catered ski chalet holiday, you can book the chalet just for your group.
